Structural design of 20m playground structure at New Brighton, Christchurch.

ENGCO were engaged by Christchurch City Council to design and
detail the steelwork and the timber platforms for the 20m long
waka playground structure as part of the remodelling of the New
Brighton Beachside Playground project.

Special attention was needed as the loading standards for playground equipment are unique and often higher than residential loading standards, to ensure the safety of the young users of the waka.

Reduction of sharp corners by covering bolt heads and arris corners on timber was also key in avoiding any unnecessary injuries.

Working closely with the architect, cultural artwork consultant and steel fabricator ensured a successful delivery of the project for the client.

With an estimated one thousand people visiting the playground on a busy summer’s day, the waka is a great addition to the regeneration of the New Brighton area in Christchurch.
