Located near Burwood Hospital, this new single-storey 1033m2 building was designed to replace the existing structure.
With it’s irregular shape, the building is a hybrid of steel bracing frames integrated into the patterned glass facade and exposed PLT (parallel laminated timber) roof panels and CLT (cross laminated timber) wall panels.
The project won Bronze in the Designer’s Institute of New Zealand Best Design Awards in 2024.
ENGCO designed custom-made brackets hidden within the CLT shear walls for both aesthetic purposes and to ensure clear accessibility for the disabled visitors to the centre whilst ensuring robustness and resilience to earthquakes.
CLT was chosen for the walls due to both the height of the interiors and as part of the seismic lateral load resisting system (LLRS).
Due to the existing soil conditions, ENGCO designed a Ribraft foundation on reinforced gravel raft for efficient construction and reduced cost compared to alternative systems.
Working closely with the architect RM Designs right from the beginning, and with them and the key contractor Contract Constructions throughout construction ensured the successful delivery of the project to meet the client’s needs.
Internally, ENGCO’s Civil and Structural teams worked closely together to ensure a cohesive and efficient approach.
