Having lost their original clubroom in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the new facility is a welcome replacement for the club and its community.
Consisting of two storeys spread over three wings, the building is centred around the viewpoint from the patrol wing, with a large storage area, medical station, function rooms, changing room and commercial kitchen and bar.

It is a hybrid building utilising masonry block for the basement ground floor, and structural steel and engineered timber for the upper level. A thin steel skeleton frame for the patrol tower to achieve a high seismic performance whilst retaining critical viewing angles for the surf life saving operation.

The design of the patrol wing was particularly challenging given its slender aspect ratio in order to not take up valuable space, while providing extensive views required for patrolling.
